Careful where you toss that: 5 people arrested in Denpasar for littering

After fining a local resident Rp 1 million last week for tossing out tempe at the wrong time, Denpasar city is making it abundantly clear that they aren’t playing when it comes to waste management.

The city’s ‘Cleanliness Task Force’ made up of city officials as well as traditional village officials just arrested five more residents on Tuesday for “carelessly” throwing garbage out onto the sidewalk.

“We were forced to secure them and then we told them to clean up their trash that they threw away, and then we confiscated their identity cards and left it to investigators to look into it further,” East Denpasar Camat (district head) Made Puspawan told Tribun Bali

Puspawan remarked on how frustrating it is to every day find garbage piled up outside of the proper disposal time and discarded carelessly in the street, instead of in trash receptacles.

The cases for the five litterers will be handed over to the Denpasar City Sanitation Department, Puspawan says.
