One man was killed and two more were heavily injured after they were run over by a car in Tabanan regency yesterday.
The three men, all from Jember, East Java, were sitting on the sidewalk while waiting for their ride. Then, a black Toyota Avanza, driven by a 60-year-old man, suddenly veered off the road and ran over the three victims before it came to a stop after hitting a steel pole. CCTV footage of the tragedy has circulated widely online.
One of the victims, a 41-year-old man, died at the scene due to fatal impact to his head. One of the survivors suffered broken bones while the other had a gashed head among other wounds. Both are being treated at the Tabanan General Hospital.
The driver has been placed under police custody.
“[It’s suspected] that he was sleepy so he lacked focus while driving,” Tabanan Police Traffic Department Chief Kanisius Franata said.
Under Indonesian law, vehicular manslaughter caused by negligent driving is a crime punishable by up to 12 years in prison.
