One phone thief’s reaction when getting caught stealing in Canggu was to hide under the bed.
The perp, S, 29, from Banyuwangi, East Java, had apparently snuck into a shophouse on Jl. Raya Canggu in Tibubeneng Village in the early hours of Tuesday morning around 3:30 am.
The victim, Flores man, PS, 22, had been asleep in one of the shophouse’s bedrooms at the time.
“The victim was asleep, then awoke after hearing a noise and saw a man taking his phone,” Tribun Bali quoted an unidentified police source as saying.
As soon as PS saw the invader, he shouted “thief”, causing S to panic and dive under the bed, according to the source.
“Knowing the perpetrator was hiding under the bed, the victim got out and locked his bedroom door to trap the perpetrator in order to not get out,” the source explained.
After locking up his room, the victim contacted the police and apparently tried to communicate with S, suggesting he surrender before the police pick him up.
But the police arrived at the scene a short while later and ended up escorting S to the North Kuta Police station for further proceedings.
Head of North Kuta Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit, Insp. Putu Ika Prabawa confirmed the case to local media and said that S managed to get into the ruko because PS had left the door unlocked.
“We are still investigating, because it just happened.”
