Canadian lifeguard helps save 4 locals from drowning on his Bali vacation

A 20-year-old Canadian on holiday is being hailed as a hero in Bali after helping save four local people from drowning.

Samuel Rousseau-Mascolo was on a Canggu beach last week when he noticed some swimmers struggling in the ocean.

He quickly grabbed help from another person with a surfboard nearby and together they paddled out to help bring the swimmers to shore, reports CBC

Rousseau-Mascolo is no doubt getting a lot of press compared to rescues that local lifeguards must make daily since he’s not from around here, but we’re impressed with his quick reaction time.

“Even on vacation, you’re a lifeguard at heart,” he told Radio-Canada.

“Each of us [had] two swimmers clinging to our surfboard, which we used as a lifesaver,” he said.

Twelve minutes later, the lifeguard said they were able to get the swimmers to shore, where he provided first aid on the beach, and insisted the swimmers go the hospital.

“We wanted to prevent a secondary drowning because they had inhaled a lot of water and it could have been in their lungs,” he explained.

While he doesn’t know what happened after to the nearly-drowned victims, he says they were breathing, and a pulse, and should fully recover with medical attention at the hospital.
