Calls for shutting down internet next time during Nyepi after ‘silent day’ selfies circulate

After Nyepi last week on March 9, photos quickly spread in Bali of people claiming to go outside during the island’s “Day of Silence,” when people are supposed to stay in their homes.

Netizens quickly lamented over people’s lack of respect for the Hindu traditions in Bali.

One extreme suggestion to prevent such violations, sent to local newspaper Tribun Bali, demanded internet be shutdown next time during Nyepi.

“If possible during Nyepi, data centers (Google, Facebook, etc.) should be shutdown! Don’t let anyone upload photos during Nyepi,” Wayan Purnata proposed, sharing his frustration with the newspaper of how Hindus do not appreciate their own religion.

One of the people who posted the controversial photos has apologized and claims they were not his own pics, he was only sharing them.

“Sorry, I only read and saw the photos on Facebook, I’m mortified now,” Facebook user Ketut Suweta apologetically posted.
