Bulgarian man gets 12 years for ATM skimming in Bali

Denpasar District Court has sentenced a Bulgarian man to 12 years in prison for ATM skimming activities in Kuta, Bali.

Dimitar Nikolov Iliev had been accused of stealing banking data from ATM users by breaking a padlock behind the ATM and swapping out the keypad canopy with a fake that had a camera so he could record customers’ PIN codes.

“The suspect is proven guilty of intentionally stealing and going against the law by accessing computer data or an electronic system by breaking into a security system,” Judge Achmed Peten Sili said as quoted by Kompas

Iliev will also have to pay a fine of Rp 100 million or serve six extra months in jail.

He could have gotten an even longer sentence but he did confess to his crime and was well-behaved in court—this apparently gets you very far in the Denpasar justice system.
