Budget of monument to Engeline estimated at Rp 1 billion

Even if it costs Rp 1 billion, the National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA) is getting ready to build a monument in memory of Engeline, the eight-year-old girl found in June buried in her backyard in Bali.

The monument is interestingly set to be completed at the crime scene where Engeline was found at her adopted family’s house in Denpasar on Jl. Tuberose Street No. 26.

After signing the monument’s inscription on Monday, the Komnas PA Chairman Aris Merdeka Sirait says that the commission has support from various parties, including from the government and different organizations.

“The government is ready to acquire the land of Engeline’s crime scene that will be used for the monument. We’re going to flatten the buildings at the scene and built a monument to Engeline,” Sirait told Tribun Bali

Sirait claims this monument will be the first of its kind in the world, that is a memorial to a case of violence against children.

His estimated budget for construction amounts to Rp 1 billion, reports Tribun. (Plans seem to have only gotten bigger since he was originally quoted last month as saying he hoped the groundbreaking would be before National Children’s Day on July 23.)

Meanwhile, police are still working to get to the bottom of Engeline’s case, which remains ongoing.
