The adoptive mother of eight-year-old Angeline, whose disappearance and murder has captivated Bali for weeks, is now a suspect.
Police declared Margareith a suspect on Sunday, though not in relation to Angeline’s murder, but concerning a separate offense around child neglect.
According to Tribun Bali, Margareith was questioned for two hours by the police yesterday before being taken to the police station accompanied by her daughter, Yvonne.
Prior to her arrest, Margareith denied any allegations of abuse towards Angeline, who was reported missing from her Sanur home on May 16 and discovered dead and buried in her own backyard on June 10.
Meanwhile, a Kompas article suggests that there might be another suspect in the picture, based on a police “confession” of Agus, Margareth’s former housekeeper who had been declared the sole suspect.
Agus reportedly told parliament member Akbar Faisal that Margareith promised him two billion rupiah to kill Angeline.
This statement surprised Bali police chief Ronny F. Sompie, who told Tribun that he needed to clarify this with Agus. However, Agus’ lawyer, Haposan Sihombing, told Merdeka earlier today that while Agus did say this, his “confession” about being promised monetary rewards for his crime is a complete lie.
Haposan supposedly claimed that Agus said those things because he “hates Margareith”. However, when asked why his hatred towards Margareith would lead him to kill Angeline, Haposan declined to provide further details.
Agus also reportedly told Haposan that he had received a phone call threatening his life if he revealed “the secrets around Angeline’s death”. His lawyer declined to give any more details.
Confusing, fishy and conflicting much? We think so too.
With the ending to Angeline’s search mystery being such a tragic one, we can only hope for one thing in the quest to solve this murder mystery — that the perpetrator(s) responsible for this horrific crime is properly brought to justice.
