A dead spinner dolphin washed ashore in Seminyak this morning.
Ferry, 36, was doing his morning workout near Double Six Beach when he caught sight of the sea mammal at approximately 8am. He took a picture of the poor animal and the image was shared by local community accounts on social media.
“I think it was around 1 meter long,” Ferry told Coconuts, adding that the dolphin was dead when he found it.
“I don’t know what happened after because I had to go back to my activities.”
Non-profit organization Yayasan Bali Bersih’s Marine Environment Program Officer Pande Ketut Cahya Krisnanta Arioka told Coconuts that his organization was notified about the dead dolphin and went onsite to investigate.
“The dolphin was buried at around 10am by members of the Kuta beach task force and Badung Bali’s baywatch team, Balawista,” Ketut Cahya said.
Coconuts has reached out to the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) for comment.
The Head of Denpasar Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center (BPSPL) Permana Yudiarso said that the dolphin was estimated to be under 5 years old.
“It’s still a calf,” he said, adding that based on their visual inspection that the calf might have been bitten by a cookiecutter shark based on its wounds.
*EDITOR’S NOTE: In an earlier version of this article, we wrote that the dolphin was a bottlenose dolphin. It has been confirmed that it was actually a spinner dolphin. We also added a comment from the Denpasar Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center (BPSPL) in this article.
