UPDATE Sept. 10: The Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) in Bali suspects that the birds that fell down in Gianyar had died by poisoning from non-natural pesticides commonly used around the area on which they fell.
Hundreds of sparrows fell down from the sky and inexplicably died in Bali’s Gianyar regency yesterday morning, as local authorities attempt to provide some explanation over the shocking occurrence.
The mass die-off, which occurred in a cemetery, was shown in a viral video that has been circulating widely. According to reports, the incident occurred right after it had rained.

Meruanto, a spokesman from the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) in Bali, said this is the first time that such an instance has taken place in the region. Authorities have yet to determine a cause for the incident, but offered one possible explanation.
“But if we’re talking about the condition and natural events, it can be said that there was a lot of acid during the rain. It’s possible that that caused the birds to fall [from the sky],” Meruanto said.
In addition, the head of the animal health department from the Gianyar administration, Made Santiarka, said the birds may have fallen due to extreme weather.
