A Balinese man died of a suspected heart attack during a group pilgrimage hike over the weekend at Mt. Abang in Abangsongan Village, Kintamani.
I Wayan Ariana, 40, was hiking the sacred mountain in a group of 45 Balinese Hindu pilgrims – all of whom were reportedly related – on Sunday at around 9am.
After observing ceremonies at the peak of the mountain, group members noticed that Wayan looked exhausted, after which he collapsed and lost consciousness.
The Karangasem Search and Rescue Agency (SAR) was alerted to the situation and dispatched a rescue team. After traversing extreme weather conditions, rescuers managed to reach the victim at around 1:30am yesterday. Sadly, Wayan had already passed away.
Karangasem SAR Coordinator I Gusti Ngurah Eka Wiadnyana said that, amid the harsh conditions, the evacuation of Wayan’s body took 11 hours.
The body was immediately brought to Wayan’s village in Pecatu, South Kuta.
