Over $13,000 has been raised on a crowdfunding page set up to help Balian shark attack victim Ryan Boarman pay for his mounting medical costs that are uncovered by insurance and to get him to Singapore for further treatment.
The American surfer was out catching waves in Balian, West Bali on Monday when a shark bit his arm near the elbow, tearing through muscle, all the way down to the bone.

Boarman’s friends and onlookers helped stabilize him and get him to a local hospital—after Boarman himself was amazingly able to surf back into the beach following the bite. Legendary.
The most recent update on Boarman’s Gofundme page says he’s been cleared to fly to Singapore on a specialized commercial flight with a nurse. The flight, the nurse, and the medical supplies will cost roughly $9,000, according to the fundraising site. Obviously the flight’s not the only cost that’s amounted and the fundraising goal has been set at $25,000. His family does say, however, if there are leftover funds, that those will be given to charities that Boarman selects.
While Indonesian doctors were apparently able to save Boarman’s arm, he’s still in quite a lot of pain and the Singapore doctors will be able to give him a better idea of the arm’s future functionality. Cepat sembuh!
