With more and more reports of foreign nationals misbehaving on the Island of Gods, Bali’s tourism agency said it’s drafting a set of guidelines for tourists containing dos and don’ts for them to follow to help ensure harmony between visitors and locals.
Tjokorda Bagus Pemayun, the head of Bali Province’s Tourism Agency, said earlier today that the upcoming guidelines contain dozens of things that tourists – Indonesians and foreigners – are obligated to do as well as things that are forbidden.
“Tourists must honor local values, cultures, and natural environments – including obeying traffic rules,” he said.
Tjokorda said that the handbook was initiated by Bali Governor Wayan Koster and the tourism agency is working closely with the Bali Provincial Office of Indonesia’s central bank as well as tourism associations on the project.
The guidelines, which will be distributed in the form of flyers, will be produced in both English and Indonesia. Tjokorda said that they will finish the proposal this week before sending it to Koster.
While the tourism head did not disclose what other subjects the guidelines would cover, given some of the recent stories of misbehaving foreigners that have made local and international headlines, we’re guessing they’ll include handy advice such as DON’T pose naked on sacred trees or mountains, and DON’T yell profanities at police officers who ticket you for disobeying traffic rules.
