Gede Kama, a nineteen-year old from Busungbiu village, Buleleng, will be sent to prison for the third time after he was found guilty of cellphone theft. Police had reportedly been chasing Kama for six days when they finally tracked him down and arrested him at his house on Sunday.

Talking to local media outside of Buleleng Police Headquarters on Tuesday, the unemployed teenager admitted that he was relieved to be jailed because it meant that he didn’t have to worry about finding money to help fill his stomach.

“Yes, I’m happy because I can get rice,” Kama said, as quoted in Tribun Bali.

Kama admitted to carrying out cell phone thefts at three different residences, most recently on Mon, January, 14, according to a report in Jawa Pos. Each time, he had reportedly forced his way into the empty homes through a door and then sold the stolen goods at a handphone counter in the village.

When asked about his motives for the thefts though, Kama apparently said that it was simply because smartphones have good cameras for taking selfies.

Despite Kama’s strange remarks, police emphasized that he was a proficient thief, skilled at casing homes to steal from.

Police Chief Commissioner I Made Agus Dwi Wirawan also addressed the inconsistencies in Kama’s story.

“In front of the media, he claimed the cellphones to have been stolen for selfies. In fact, they had been sold at HP [handphone] counters,” he said, as quoted by Tribun Bali.

As a result of his actions, Kama could face a sentence of up to five years in prison.
