Police finally hunted down a much wanted Bali bag snatcher, who did not surrender without a struggle.
Alleged thief Made Sutapa fought desperately against police when arrested in his home in Mengwi on Sunday, reports Denpost.
He apparently injured his right leg trying to get away, as police had to put some “hot lead” aka bullets into his leg to slow him down.
In the presence of police, Sutapa reportedly confessed to eight different instances of grabbing bags from people driving motorbikes in Bali: one time in Ginayar and seven times in Abiansemal. He says he was targeting women driving alone.
Abiansemal police chief Made Oka Kusuma told Denpost that Sutapa has already been in prison five times for the same crime of mugging.
Kusuma added that police are investigating if Sutapa is responsible for further mugging instances that he did not yet fess up to.
Sutapa’s arrest reportedly originates from a victim’s report, Ni Luh Gede Widyaningsih to Abiansemal Police. The woman from Abiansemal told police that the suspect snatched her bag when she was crossing Jalan Raya Blakiuh, Bongkasa, some time ago. She had given police the thief’s motorbike plate number, but police hit a dead end when they found it to be a fake. But police say they later checked the records of a number os suspected thieves which led them to eventually identify Kusuma as a suspect.
And then it was this weekend when Sutapa was tracked to his home in Mengwi, which was raided by police.
Upon seeing police arrive, he desperately tried to resist and escape. “We were forced to immobilize the suspect with bullets,” said the police chief.
The best part of the story is that Kusuma reportedly claimed to engage in the theft because of the necessary costs of living AND to have fun. Yeah, ok.
