Bali: Santai, we have enough rice on the island

Running out of rice is almost as scary as running out of water in a country with the local philosophy of “belum makan nasi, belum makan” (if you haven’t eaten rice, you haven’t eaten).

With rice prices rising in Bali, locals have no doubt been concerned about possible shortages. But really, what’s nasi campur or nasi padang without the nasi? Just a whole laut of side dishes (see what we did there?).

Bali’s Logistics Agency (Bulog) says that rice supplies in Bali are safe since there are 15,200 tons stockpiled, which should carry us through the next six months, reports Antara.

Rice supplied from East Java will continue to meet the demands of our hungry island, says I Wayan Budita, head of Bulog in Bali.

Budita told Antara that rice prices on the rise can be explained by a number of factors like bad weather and that fact that farmers have not yet entered the harvest season.

Let’s hope Bulog is right. We need our nasi campur.
