Bali remembers bombing victims, 13th anniversary of first attack

It’s been 13 years since the fateful day in which 202 people tragically lost their lives in Bali during a terrorist attack

Hundreds of tourists reportedly flocked to the Bali bombing monument on Kuta’s Jl. Legian on Monday, the anniversary of the terrorist attack, in memory of the victims killed on October 12, 2002.

Tourists could be seen leaving flowers at the monument and praying and reflecting.

“I have come here to offer my prayers as today, we commemorate with great sadness the tragic event that took place in Bali on October 12, 2002, killing 202 people, including 88 Australians,” Steve Douglas, a tourist from Australia, said to Antara

Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist organization Jemaah Islamiya was ultimately held responsible for the brutal blast where a suicide bomber inside a tourist bar was followed by a car bomb in the nearby Sari Club.

October is a hard month for Bali; the 2002 attack was followed by another bombing in 2005 on Oct. 1 that claimed the lives of 20 people.
