As many as 42 inmates at Singaraja Prison in North Bali got their sentences cut in honor of the Balinese holiday, Hari Raya Nyepi Caka 1938.
Four of these prisoners are serving for corruption and three for drugs, according to Tribun Bali.
It’s a time-honored Indonesian tradition to give out sentence reductions to “well-behaved” prisoners on public holidays and Nyepi is no exception.
Singaraja Prison Warden Sutarno says the reduction amounts vary and were awarded based on an assessment of each prisoner. Over all, one inmate got two months cut from their sentence, 23 inmates got one month reductions, and 18 prisoners got 15 days taken off.
