Bali Police has reportedly sacked its narcotics director after a string of corruption allegations erupted this week.
The news of Franky Haryanto being stripped of his title follows his arrest earlier this week by Bali Police Internal Affairs for alleged extortion of narcotics case suspects.
Bali Police Chief Insp. Gen. Sugeng Priyanto made the announcement on Thursday.
“To facilitate the course of the investigation, today I’m issuing orders to the concerned party (Haryanto) to hand over all duties and responsibilities,” Priyanto told CNN Indonesia.
Haryanto’s former position and responsibilities have been assigned to the Head of Legal Affairs Commissioner I Gusti Kade Budi Haryasana.
“He (Haryasana) has been appointed as acting narcotics director” until the investigation is completed,” Priyanto said.
Meanwhile, police spokesman Insp. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said separately that Haryanto is still being questioned.
“It wasn’t in an operation catching him red-handed, but there were reports that had previously come in.” Amar said, as quoted by CNN.
According to Amar, a report had been made about Haryanto by a drug user who felt “manipulated and exploited.”
Haryanto was arrested on Monday under suspicion of extortion of drug suspects, but he’s also accused of embezzlement.
