Bali Police investigate OPM flag hung in Kuta

Bali Police is currently trying to figure out who put up a flag of the Free Papua Movement (OPM) at an elementary school garage in Kuta.

“It’s not yet been discovered who put it up. Police are conducting an investigation to find out who put it there,” Bali Police Chief Insp. Gen. Sugeng Priyanto told Kompas on Tuesday.

Priyanto added that part of the investigation is also to get behind the motive, to determine why someone would put the flag in such a major tourist area, like Kuta.

The “Morning Star” flag of the Papuan separatist group was taken down and confiscated by police on Tuesday—only after the school had realized what it was. They had apparently thought it was some football club flag, Priyanto explained.

The OPM flag had been in the garage since Jan. 31, 2015, according to Erwin Yudi Kisnowo, who works for the school’s security.
