Bali Police deny abuse allegations of Engeline murder suspect

The attorney of a suspect on trial for the murder of eight-year-old Engeline alleged last week that his client was coerced into confessing.

Hotman Paris Hutapea alleged that police beat and stripped his client, Agustay Hamda May, until he signed an investigation report saying that he was the one who killed Engeline.

But Bali Police spokesman Hery Wiyanto denies any allegations that Agus was mistreated by police.

“We did the inspection in accordance with the procedure and there were no threats, much less violence,” Wiyanto said in Denpasar on Wednesday, as quoted by Republika.

Wiyanto added that Engeline’s adoptive mother and Agus’ alleged co-conspirator Margriet Megawe, has not been corroborating the allegations.

Police are so confident in themselves that Wiyanto even said police investigators are ready to step forward and present witnesses if the judge should so desire.
