Bali Pet Crusaders opt to sterilize dogs for free to combat rabies

At last, a positive story about Bali dogs.

Bali Pet Crusaders, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing free sterilization to dogs and cats across Bali, were sterilizing pet and stray dogs today at Denpasar.

They were also helped by a few volunteers, including several veterinarians from all over Bali.

The organizer, Desy, told Tribun Bali about their motivations behind organizing the sterilization sessions, “There are too many dogs that are breeding, too many shelters that are overcrowded, and too many stray dogs roaming around the streets. We are doing this to control stray dogs from excessive breeding and also combat rabies”.

Bali Pet Crusaders routinely conducts free sterilization sessions. They will reportedly hold another one on 6 and 7 August at Jalan Pulau Batam, No 10, Denpasar.

Rabies has been an ongoing issue in Bali this year. It was recently reported that 155 villages have reported cases of rabies in 2015.

Though authorities urged dog owners to take preventative measures, such as vaccinating, sterilizing, and not letting their dogs run wild, they have also resorted to bursts of random elimination.

We’re hoping that Bali Pet Crusaders continue to do the awesome work that they do, and their initiatives sends the message to authorities that there are other measures to counter rabies apart from unnecessary culling.
