Bali makes plans to up security during local elections, anticipating terrorist threat

The threat of terrorism has Bali planning security for the local elections in December way in advance.

The island’s police force will deploy 12,764 personnel during the elections throughout all regencies with elections, Deputy Chief of Bali Police Nyoman Suryasta told Kompas on Wednesday.

“Bali has experienced the tragedy of the Bali bombing. So we must anticipate,” Suryasta said.

Elections will reportedly be on December 9 this year across the five regencies of Badung, Tabanan, Bangli, Karangasem, and Jembrana, and in the city of Denpasar.

Suryasta added that the traditional neighborhood watch groups, the pecalang, are also coordinating with police to keep the island safe during elections.
