The Sukhoi fighter jet squadron that touched down at Ngurah Rai International Airport yesterday is reportedly here to provide a military escort for the imminent transfer of two Bali Nine Australians on death row from Bali’s Kerobokan Prison to their execution site in Central Java, Nusakambangan prison island.
A military commander has been quoted by Indonesian media as saying that the squadron is prepped to guard the aircraft that Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumarn will be transferred in.
However, international media like news.com.AU has been slower to confirm that the jets are specifically in Bali for the Bali Nine pair’s security escort purposes and is instead just saying that that’s the word on the street.
We still don’t know when Chan and Sukumaran will actually be moved to Nusakambangan, but Bali’s chief prosecutor has gone on record saying it will “likely” be this week.
