Bali has an estimated Rp 2 trillion of bank notes in crappy condition: BI

Ever get handed back rupiah notes, usually the smaller denominations, that look like they’ve been flushed down the toilet and come back up again? We’re talking torn, wrinkled, stained, and tissue-paper thin.

There are as much as Rp 2 trillion worth of rupiah notes circulating in Bali in “crappy”, worn-out condition, according to Bank Indonesia (BI).

Chief representative for the central bank in Bali, Causa Iman Karana, says BI is working on swapping out the shoddy bills for fresh, crisp ones.

At the same time, people need to cool it on crunching up and wrinkling bills when handling them so that they will last longer, Karana told Tribun Bali

BI will be mainly focusing on Bali’s main tourist areas, such as Ubud and Kuta for money swapping operations.

In addition to treating small notes like the Rp 2k, 5k, and 10k with more care, Karana also suggests people use non-cash transactions to go easier on the paper.
