Bali gov’t discusses putting 25-year age restriction on vehicles

A hot topic amongst Bali government officials at the moment is whether the province will put an age restriction of 25 years on vehicles.

New regulations under discussion in Bali would have private vehicles older than 25 years get smashed into pieces of scrap metal which would later be recycled.

The point is to limit the number of vehicles of Bali since the island’s clearly got a congestion problem going on—though to us, the problem seems to be mostly caused by hordes of newer cars and massive tourist buses.

A limit on public transportation vehicles would possibly also be imposed, but with an even shorter max of 10 to 15 years.

However, the chairman of the special committee drafting the Traffic and Transportation Regulations (LLAJ) says this is vehicle age restriction policy is still very much in the early phases and it’s still debatable about whether or not it will happen. A feasibility study is still being conducted, Chairman Ida Bagus Udiyana explained to Tribun Bali.

Udiyana added that there’s also discussion about finding a “formula that’s better and wiser” that wouldn’t just be based on a vehicle’s age, but would also take into account how the vehicle is working.

In addition to reducing both congestion and pollution caused by cars, modifications to LLAJ would help move the auto industry forward here, encouraging the development of new cars and allowing old cars to be recycled, Udiyana explained.
