Bali governor’s office denies lifting of South Bali hotel moratorium

Despite news apparently circulating earlier of Bali Province lifting a moratorium on the building of new hotels in South Bali, the governor’s office is insisting that the moratorium is still in place.

The moratorium was issued on December 27, 2010 and officially suspended the issuance of permits for hotels in South Bali (Badung, Gianyar, and Denpasar regencies), but realistically, as we can all see, it’s pretty much hasn’t been doing jack

“Mr. Governor has explicitly stated that there has been no lifting of the moratorium and we remain guided by the moratorium that was released in 2010,” spokesman for the Bali Governor’s office, Dewa Made Mahendra Putra, said in Denpasar on Monday, as quoted by Kompas

Even though studies from Udayana University assert that hotel construction can be done in Badung in 2016 and Denpasar in 2017, that doesn’t mean the moratorium is upended, Putra explained.

The moratorium was put in place recognizing that there are already more than cukup hotels in South Bali. There are 130,000 hotel rooms on the island, 90,000 of which are in South Bali, according to Kompas.
