Bali Gojek drivers strike in Denpasar

Hundreds of drivers working for the Indonesian ride-hailing app Gojek have reportedly gone on strike.

The motorbike drivers were demonstrating at the Gojek branch officer at Jl. Teuku Umar Barat on Monday.

There are two reasons cited for the strike including the app’s controversial tariff reduction (a low tariff got even lower) and secondly, complaints about the system determining the target performance for each driver.

One Gojek driver, Udin told local newspaper Tribun Bali that Gojek’s tariff cut is making it harder on drivers to earn money per ride. It used to be that rides under seven kilometers cost Rp 15k, but now they are only Rp 12k.

“It’s certainly hard for us. Moreover, the tariff is split between drivers and the management. And then, the money still needs to be used for the cost of pulsa (phone credit) and also gasoline.”

For less than one US dollar, that’s a pretty big stretch for that tariff to cover.

Meanwhile, Bali Gojek drivers say they are also struggling with the app’s rating system, complaining that it’s quite hard to reach performance targets and achieve bonus points.
