Bali dengue deaths double

Ahead of ASEAN Dengue Day on June 15, Bali is examining the virus’ stats for 2015 and so far, the numbers aren’t looking so great.

Up through April 2015, the mortality rate in the province of Bali more than doubled from the same month the year before in 2014, reports Tribun Bali

“Cases of dengue in Bali were the highest from February until May,” said the head of Bali’s provincial health office, Dr. I Ketut Suarjaya on Wednesday, on the sidelines of a press conference related to ASEAN’s Dengue Day.

He explained that from January to April 2015, 5,249 cases of dengue fever were recorded in Bali.

Of that number, 18 people have been declared dead from the mosquito-borne virus. Meanwhile, in 2014 in the same time period, there were just 3,970 cases of dengue with nine fatalities.

“The figure shows the public still has many obstacles associated with the outbreak of dengue,” he said.

One of the most common factors cited in dengue deaths has proven to be not seeking medical attention soon enough
