Police are hunting for a motorcycle taxi (ojek online or ojol in Indonesian) driver who is suspected of raping a Brazilian national. The Bali Regional Police and Denpasar City Police have formed a team to pursue the ojol driver.

“The Bali Regional Police and Denpasar City Police have formed a team to search for and apprehend the perpetrator,” said Bali Police spokesman Jansen Avitus Panjaitan in a statement made available last night.

Jansen stated that the rape incident took place yesterday on an empty plot of land on Nyang-nyang Street, in Jimbaran, South Kuta. The incident occurred between 4pm and 5pm.

The police have obtained the identity of the suspected perpetrator, a man with the initials WD, originally from Jember, East Java. The victim is a Brazilian woman identified as GWL, 26.

“The victim is a Brazilian tourist who was vacationing in Bali and staying in a villa in the Jimbaran area,” explained the former Chief of Denpasar City Police.

Jansen continued that the team had visited GWL and collected her statement to complete the necessary legal documentation and gather evidence. The police are also making efforts to provide a sense of security and special support to the Brazilian national.

Initially, people were made aware of the incident thanks to a post on a Facebook group for the Uluwatu travelers that was uploaded yesterday morning.

“DANGER, This [redacted] driver raped a young girl last night between Uluwatu and Bingin. Ladies never travel alone at night,” said the uploader.
