Bali Airport shuts down for runaway maintenance, messing with over 80 flights

It’s not only volcanoes that screw with flight schedules in Bali.

A flaky airport runway at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International reportedly disrupted 89 flights earlier today.

The airport was shut down for roughly four hours on Wednesday when peeling asphalt on ‘Runway 09’ demanded immediate maintenance, Ngurah Rai General Manager Trikora Harjo told local media. Oh, that darned ‘Runway 09’.

“More or less, the peeling asphalt was about 100 centimeters by 70 centimeters from the west end of the 800 meter runway,” Tribun Bali quoted Harjo as saying.

As a result, the airport had to officially shutdown, stopping all take-offs and landings from about 6:07 pm until 9:50 pm, he said. We’re sure the throngs of travelers on the rescheduled flights loved that—but better safe than sorry!
