Bali 9 Renae Lawrence could get sentence reduction in commemoration of ‘merdeka’

Renae Lawrence, a drug mule for the Australian Bali Nine group, has been recommended for a sentence reduction in time with Indonesia’s Independence Day.

However, Made Malena, a prison officer at Bangli prison where Lawrence is locked up, says that her possible nine-month sentence cut has not yet been approved by Jakarta, reports the Sydney Morning Herald

But Lawrence did apparently already get a three-month remission granted thanks to a series of bonuses going out to well-behaved prisoners in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence.

Lawrence, 37, was handed 20 years behind bars for her role in a 2004 heroin smuggling operation that saw Bali Nine ringleaders Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran executed this past April

Lawrence is apparently the only member of the group eligible for a sentence reduction.

Though her time on the inside may get cut short if she’s lucky, her family has made it clear she will not follow in Schapelle Corby’s footsteps and get released on parole—she would rather finish her time in Bangli.

“She doesn’t want parole. She doesn’t want to do what [Schapelle] Corby’s done, she wants to serve out her time,” her father, Bob Lawrence said, as quoted by the SMH.
