The attorney who represented executed Bali Nine Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran was named the Victorian Australian of the Year.
Though ultimately unsuccessful in sparing the Bali Nine pair, Julian McMahon fought fiercely for his clients and has apparently dedicated his career over the past 12 years to advocating for Australians facing the death penalty overseas. A difficult undertaking indeed.
“They are truly inspirational and great role models for Australians young and old,” Premier Daniel Andrews said of McMahon and other award recipients, as quoted by the Herald Sun.
“The dedication and commitment each of them shows to their chosen field is something for us all to truly admire.”
