Backed up garbage worsens flooding during rainy season in Denpasar

As if drainage systems weren’t questionable enough in Denpasar, discarded garbage strewn in the streets is not helping the problem as the rains come in for the season.

The rain was insane in many parts of Bali on Tuesday. In Gang Padang, Jl. Batukaru located in Monang-Maning, West Denpasar, heavy flooding that day was in part thanks to large piles of garbage clogging the sewer.

Heaps of rubbish consisting of wood, bottles, plastic, and even a used mattress were observed clogging everything up by officers from the Denpasar Department of Public Works (PU) and the Department of Sanitation (DKP), reports Tribun Bali

According to local resident Putu Agus Setiawan, flooding in Gang Padang started at 8 am on Tuesday and DKP officials had sent three garbage tucks to transport rubbish from blockages occurring in the neighborhood.

At some point in the morning, DKP even gave up for awhile when the rain was very heavy and the area was so flooded, but the trucks picked everything back up again in the afternoon, Setiawan says.

Head of PU Denpasar, I Ketut Winarta says though the main thing blocking the sewage was actually palm trees stuck in the sewer, but once they were removed, water started to drain slowly but more easily.
