A CCTV recording of a robbery in Denpasar is causing some hubbub this week, as it showed the thief donning a jacket with the word “police” written on it.

The footage, which has circulated widely on social media, showed the robber wearing a helmet and a dark jacket as they approached the person manning the cashier. Fortunately, the attempt was foiled because there was another customer at the shop.

Wibowo Sidi, Head of the General Crimes Unit in East Denpasar sub-precinct, said the incident took place on Monday evening.

“A joint team from the Denpasar City Police and the Bali Police, according to instructions from the leader, will be pursuing [the perpetrator] until they are caught. We are still looking for who did this, and we will provide updates later,” Sidi said today.

Sidi explained that the robber brandished a knife to scare his victim, who was also the shop owner.

“The perpetrator didn’t [assault anyone]. There was somebody else at the time who saw him so he got scared and ran away,” Sidi said, adding that the victim had also screamed loudly to attract attention.

Though the victim did not file a report about the incident, police said they will still carry on with an investigation.
