Aussie property developer was suffering from stroke when unfairly added to ‘wanted list’, says his girlfriend

An Australian property developer accused of fraud and embezzlement in Bali was unfairly put on police’s wanted list since he was suffering from a stroke in the hospital, not trying to evade arrest, his girlfriend says.

Aussie Eric Bevan Gillet was arrested last week for allegedly defrauding a couple during a villa sale in Bali over two years ago—he was reported to the police in December 2014, but police just added him to their wanted list last December. Talk about slow processing.

“We searched his address and he was not there so we put him on the hunted list,” Bali police spokeswoman Sri Harmiti said last week, as quoted by AAP.

But Gillet’s girlfriend, Enggi Wau, says putting her boyfriend on the wanted list was absolutely unnecessary.

“He does not deserve to be wanted by the police. He was in hospital … He had a mild stroke,” she said.

Police want to get Gillet’s case to prosecutors by Feb. 17.

An Australian Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said “they were providing consular assistance to an Australian man in Bali,” but couldn’t say more because of privacy obligations.
