Aussie man reportedly close to death in need of urgent surgery, but no insurance so doctors won’t operate

An Australian man who was reportedly violently attacked in his Kerobokan villa could apparently die soon because he lacks insurance.

News Corp Australia is reporting that elderly man John Burke from Darwin is unconscious in Sanglah Hospital, but doctors won’t operate on him because without insurance he doesn’t have enough money for the operation.

The surgery is needed to relieve pressure on his brain from internal bleeding—doctors believe Burke was struck in the back of the head with a sharp object—News Corp reports.

This kind of grim treatment makes us wonder how many uninsured Indonesians slip through the cracks, also unable to pay for their own care.

Burke is believed to have lived in Bali for the past 10 years.

A police investigation has so far found no witnesses.

Friends and other concerned people in Bali have been trying to help the man.
