An American traveler lost his right foot after falling from a cliff by a waterfall in Buleleng.

The 22-year-old American, who is identified by his initials DJS, reportedly went to Aling-Aling Waterfall in Sambangan Village, Sukasada yesterday without a guide.

Sukasada Police Chief Made Agus Dwi Wirawan said that the Georgia-based DJS trekked to the waterfall via a track from neighboring village Ambengan. At around 12:15pm, he decided to climb a cliff near the waterfall.

Made Agus said that a fellow traveler, 40-year-old Frenchman Rigaud Alixis Louis Yves, warned DJS that the cliff was too dangerous to climb. DJS ignored the warning.

Soon after, DJS slipped and fell. To make matters worse, a big chunk of cliffstone fell on his right leg.

“The victim screamed for help. A local guide later came and aided them,” said Made Agus.

Several Sambangan Village officials also arrived to help DJS, giving him first-aid assistance by using a towel to tie a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. Unfortunately, the stone crush severed DJS’ right leg from the calf down.

Coconuts received an amateur video from a local witness who was at the scene. While we will not publish the graphic footage, we can confirm that DJS has lost his right foot.

DJS was rushed to the Balimed Singaraja Hospital. According to Made Agus, the victim is still conscious and able to answer questions from the authorities.

The police chief said that his department would push the local officials to add more warning signs in the area.

“We also recommend travelers to have a local guide with them to minimize accidents like this,” he said.
