A middle-aged man from the US tragically died following a hiking accident on Mt. Agung on Friday. Authorities evacuated the victim’s body from the site the next day.

The 51-year-old US national, identified only as Kevin by Karangasem’s Search and Rescue Agency, reportedly went on a group hike with other tourists on Thursday. They began their trek at around 11pm starting from the Pengubengan Besakih hiking point.

The group had hiked to 2,700 meters above sea level by around 9am when Kevin reportedly slipped and plummeted down a cliff, which measured 10 meters in depth.

Kevin reportedly suffered injuries on his head, feet, and waist.

A spokesman with Karangasem’s Search and Rescue Agency, Gusti Ngurah Eka Widnyana, said in a statement over the weekend that Kevin received first aid help from fellow hikers, one of whom happened to be a health professional.

“At around 12:30pm, the victim was placed onto a stretcher and was unconscious. Several hours later, our team member on the field reported to us that the victim drew his last breath,” said Gusti.

The lifeless body of the American citizen arrived at the Pengubengan hiking point just past midnight and was immediately brought to the nearest hospital.
