An alleged rape case in Kuta, Bali seems to have been shrugged off by police now that it’s apparently come out that the victim knew the alleged perpetrator beforehand.
It was reported on Wednesday by local newspaper Tribun Bali that Kuta Police had arrested British man, OJJ, 43, for allegedly forcing himself on a woman, DAS, 48, at a Kuta hotel. The woman was saved by her boyfriend who walked in and forcefully removed OJJ from the room. Feeling extremely threatened after OJJ kept returning to her room, DAS reported him to the police, the newspaper had reported.
Now, that same newspaper has published an update saying the case has been “settled peacefully,” seeming to mean no further police investigation or criminal charges pressed.
“They actually know each other and are friends,” Kuta Police Criminal Unit Chief Insp. Ario Seno said, as quoted by Tribun.
Seno added that the boyfriend and the Briton had even been drinking together before the incident went down.
While all this could very well be the case, that the sexual assault has been peacefully settled between victim and attacker, rape is rape and this ‘shrug-off’ doesn’t sit well.
