8 boats deployed in search for ‘Flying fish’ guide after tragic accident

The search continues for a “flying fish” guide in Tanjng Benoa, Bali, who reportedly perished in the water after accidentally falling from the boating activity he was guiding.

Komang Astawa, 19, fell into the water and drowned while operating a flying fish Tuesday afternoon, according to the official Basarnas (search and rescue) report.

Flying fish is a popular tourist attraction in Benoa where a boat pulls a raft that becomes suspended in the air.

Reports are not super clear on the details of Astawa’s death, but according to Tribun Bali, he fell into the water during a maneuver when he was on the raft with two tourists. The tourists survived, but it’s speculated that Astawa may have drowned because he may not have been wearing a life jacket.

The search has been going on for Astawa’s remains since yesterday afternoon with a pause overnight, his body has apparently still not been found.

The head of search and rescue in Denpasar, Wayan Suyatna told Tribun Bali that they are working on deploying eight boats—on top of the helicopter that has been helping.
