5 memorable shots from Sesetan Village’s annual ‘Kissing Ritual’

What better than to ring in the New Year with a kiss? Or a bunch of kisses. 

To kick off year 1938 on the Balinese Hindu Saka calendar, young unmarried villagers aged 17-30 of Banjar Kaja Sesatan lined up for the long-standing annual “Kissing Ritual” on Thursday. 

Called omed-omedan, which translates to pull-pull, male participants pull and kiss the female participants, all whilst other villagers make it even more exciting by pouring buckets of water over the kissing pairs. Before taking to the streets, the ritual beings with worship in the temple.
