5 killed, dozens evacuated as floods inundate parts of Bali

Five people were killed after the last few days’ rainfall inundated parts of Bali with floods, while dozens of others situated in tourist hotspots had to be evacuated out of their villas.

According to reports, three people were killed after floods collapsed Erlangga Road, which connected Bangli and Karangasem, on Saturday. Two of the victims were in a car while another was on his motorbike when a landslide hit. 

A landslide also killed a construction worker in Gianyar on Saturday. The 22-year-old man was buried by while working at a construction site for a villa at around 9:30am. 

In Denpasar, a 16-year-old boy sadly passed away after his motorbike was dragged by the floodwater. He plunged into the sewers of Bung Tomo Road in Denpasar on Saturday at around 5pm.

Meanwhile, 121 tourists were evacuated from their villas in Legian and Kuta, while 33 others were evacuated from Seminyak. Thirty-five of them are reportedly foreign nationals while the rest are domestic tourists, according to an official report. 

The acting chief of the Bali chapter of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Made Rentin, said that the tourists asked for assistance after becoming stuck in their villas.

“We urge people to stay vigilant toward extreme weather that can cause floods, inundated areas, landslides, strong winds, broken trees, and more. If you are in emergency situations, please call our emergency numbers,” said Rentin. 

Separately, Gede Darmada, the chief of the Denpasar chapter of Search and Rescue Agency, said that all of the evacuees are doing well and that the floods have since subsided.
