A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck off of Bali’s southern coast in the early hours of this morning, rattling the island and neighboring West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), particularly Lombok. The majority population of the latter is Muslim, which means they felt the tremors while preparing for sahur (pre-dawn meal for fasting Muslims) during Ramadan.
According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake rocked the Klungkung area at 2:26am. The quake’s epicenter was recorded at a depth of 74 kilometers in the ocean and located 48 kilometers southeast of Klungkung. There were no aftershocks recorded up to 2:39am.
No potential tsunami alerts were issued.
Local news outlets reported that the tremors were quite significant, especially for people who live in Klungkung, Mataram, and Denpasar, with some describing it as if there were heavy trucks passing by their residences.
Per this article’s publication, there has been no damage reported due to the earthquake. BMKG officials reminded people to remain calm while double checking safety measures at their houses.
