3 headed cobra ‘appears’ at Balinese temple for holy days, residents say

Some residents who pray at Pura Tirta, in Mendoyo, Bali say a three-headed cobra has been making reoccurring appearances.

According to the residents who claim they saw this wondrous snake, the cobra would appear at the entrance to the gave where Pura Tirta is (in the Rambut Siwi Temple complex) instantly making them shocked and frightened, reports Merdeka

Any cobra would be enough to alarm us, but a three-headed one? Now that’s certainly freak out material.

“The three-headed cobra often and usually appears on holy days,” Jro Mangku Waniya, a keeper of Pura Tirta told Merdeka on Tuesday.

Waniya says that the strange cobra originally appeared back on November 28, 2012, coinciding with a full moon and the first day of the Balinese temple celebration, Piodalan.

Waniya believes that snake may have been derived from the three strands of hair of Nirartha, the founder of Rambut Siwi Temple hundreds of years ago.

“Lately this three-headed cobra is often appearing, especially during ceremonies in Rambut Siwi.” Then why haven’t we seen viral photos of the three-headed wonder all over the Bali Expats Facebook page?

Waniya claims the snake is for the eyes of “special” people only.

“But not just anyone can see it. Only certain people can see it,” Waniya told Merdeka.

The emergence of the snake is what Waniya says lead him with help of other locals to construct a cobra statue in the temple, which can be seen right when visitors walk in—and gives us non-special people a chance to see the mystical three-headed snake.
