10 nations gather in Kuta to discuss rights of ‘small fishermen’

Along with the typical tourists bumping Bintangs and figuring out which club to frequent, the future of small-scale fishing in Southeast Asia at an international forum is also a topic up for discussion in Kuta right now.

The Southeast Asia Regional Consultation Workshop from August 24-27 in Kuta is being attended by 10 countries total from the region, listed by Kompas as Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmnar, Thailand, East Timor, Vietnam, and Japan.

The goal of the event is apparently to identify the overall challenges of small-scale fisheries, as well as make an inventory of the key factors.

Why is this forum being held in Indo of all places? The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry director general for captured fisheries Gellwynn Jusuf, says that Indonesia’s massive fishing industry is 85 percent dominated by small-scale fishermen, according to Tribun Bali

“Therefore, the government should pay more attention to strengthen the small-scale fishery business to be more advanced, independent, and sustainable,” Jusuf said at the workshop at Ramada Bintang Bali Resort on Monday.
