From certain angles, any Ikea store can apparently resemble bits of Bali, as one YouTuber demonstrated in a viral prank/statement about superficial influencer culture.
On Feb. 7, US-based YouTuber Natalia Taylor posted a series of snaps on Instagram supposedly depicting her vacation in Bali. Crucially though, all of the shots were taken indoors, which may give the impression that her “photoshoot” was carried out at some fancy hotels or Airbnbs in Bali.
Three days later, Taylor dropped a jump cut-filled video on her YouTube channel explaining that the photos were taken at her local IKEA store, utilizing its model rooms for her fancy shots.
“The point of this video is to trick people into believing you’re someone you’re not,” Taylor said in the video, bashing influencers who fake aspects about their life, including travel, for social media clout.
Despite Taylor deliberately leaving clues in the form of Ikea price tags in her shots, she managed to dupe a huge amount of her followers.
“She really out here living her best life,” one user on Instagram commented.
“OMG you are in Bali?! I live in Jakarta, Indonesia,” commented another, which is presumably helpful for those who aren’t aware that Bali is also in Indonesia.
Taylor’s fake Bali vacation has received nearly 1 million views as of this afternoon. However, it must be noted that her video is not the only “social experiment” on YouTube with the premise. Last year, YouTuber Roxxsaurus fooled her followers by staging a fake one-week vacation in Bali with the help of Photoshop.
