Award-winning Australian artist Ben Quilty organizes ‘Music for Mercy’ concert to support Bali 9 death row pair

Award-winning Australian artist Ben Quilty hopes to show solidarity for Bali Nine death row inmates Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran through a concert and candlelight vigil, as the pair waits for further news of their execution.

The concert, designed to give Chan and Sukumaran hope, Music For Mercy, will reportedly feature artists like Megan Washington, Josh Pyke, and Jenny Morris. Quilty said the event is slated for Thursday, but the venue is yet to be determined, reports the AAP.

“I wanted to show Myuran and Andrew that there is support for them and that we are a forgiving and compassionate community and we’re against the death penalty,” Quilty told the Nine Network.

He added that more details about the concert will follow and Australian actor David Wenham will be the host.

Sukumaran and Chan are likely to be executed soon now that they have both been formally denied presidential clemency for their death sentences that they got in 2006 for attempting to smuggle 8.3 kilograms of heroin out of Bali. It’s unclear when and where they’ll be executed, but the Indonesian attorney general’s office says not next week, and Bali’s governor is saying not on this island.
