COCONUTS HOT SPOT — The cozy little place has been cheering up Jl. Gootama with its bright red exterior and delicious smell wafting from their kitchen for over a year now.
Jue, the friendly Thai owner of Warung Siam has perfectly passed on his recipes and culinary skills to a local chef in the kitchen so he can often be spotted up front freely chatting with the customers.
But friendly—and cute—as he is, he’s not the real reason I keep coming back to this Thai warung. Som tum, pad thai, masaman curry, and any other classic Thai street food you can think of. You name it, they do it—excellently!
But their khao moo yang—the Thai style grilled pork with sweet BBQ sauce is a personal favorite. Slices of perfectly seasoned meat simply melt in your mouth. Get the full flavor impact by dipping them in the fish sauce served with slices of chili. Sweet, spicy, salty, and simply amazing. And if the chili burns your tongue, counterintuitively a spoonful of the warm fragrant rice is a better remedy than any drink.
Speaking of drinks, their Thai iced tea may come from a premixed powder in a bag, but I did recognize it as the brand most popularly used in Bangkok—and not without good reason. The combination of smooth milkiness and signature tea flavor is spot on. Soothing and refreshing at the same time—perfect after exploring the nearby Ubud market on a hot day.
The food, the drinks, and even the atmosphere (thanks to the Thai pop music they consistently have on) really yells Bangkok street food. And the prices are really reasonable too. No misleading taxes and services here, so be sure to leave a tip if you’re happy with their service.
