COCONUTS HOT SPOT — This one’s a literal HOT spot in Ubud. How could it not be when it’s a small shop dedicated to selling sambal from all across Indonesia? It’s so hot that even the Ibu on the logo is fanning herself!
So what’s on the menu at Hot Mama Sambal?
Being in Bali, of course the shop offers sambal matah: Balinese traditional sambal made of chopped shallots, lemongrass, chillies, and kaffir lime. Hot Mama’s version of the sambal is slightly stir-fried to preserve the sambal and perfect for grilled seafood and meaty dishes.

Another Balinese sambal on the menu is sambal bongkot, uniquely made of fragrant aromatic torch ginger combined with lots of shallots and pairs extremely well with seafood and chicken dishes.
Our favorite is the sambal roa all the way from Manado, North Sulawesi. A rustic smoky sambal with grainy texture made from smoked Roa fish. It’s yummy and so versatile. You can add it on your own nasi goreng recipe, a bowl of noodle soup, or a simple plate of hot steaming rice.
And just in, their latest offer is sambal ebi, made of tiny dried shrimp. We’re hooked on the stinging spiciness combined with the savory umami flavor from the shrimps. The serving suggestion on the pack told us to enjoy it with steaming rice, but we’re quite happy munching away on the sambal alone.

Just to manage expectations, you couldn’t actually dine here. So it’s more of a shop where you buy the sambals in a jar or vacuum packs to enjoy at home or as oleh-oleh. But you can sample each sambal on a piece of rice cracker provided in the shop and water is there for free in case things get too hot. No worries for sambal-virgins, the food lover trio behind the unique shop also provides ‘mild’ options as a gentle introduction to lure you in. Don’t blame us if you get addicted though, we sure did!
